Spectrometer Updates
The electronics provided by the original equipment manufacturers notably ARL is so well proven and reliable that for existing spectrometers, we have never seen a worthwhile upgrade system that has ever been as good as the original equipment. This is little wonder as the ARL 3460 system for example has proven to be so reliable that for decades now it has hardly changed and the equipment is still currently produced.
Of the 'upgrades' we have seen, they offer no advantage and in many cases perform less well than the original equipment and are notoriously difficult to support as they are in many cases produced by one man bands. We have even recently heard that an 'upgrade' is available for ARL equipments so that any faults in it can be remotely diagnosed !
Before you consider this, our figures suggest that the average period between electronic breakdowns on the 3460 series of equipment is less than one in four years. The most common fault is power supply failure so this would of course stop the ability to remotely diagnose any problems in any event.
We consider it is extremely hazardous to have remote access and control to such equipment as it is capable of producing lethal voltages, often in excess of fifteen thousand volts and we consider offering such facilities as being quite irresponsible.
In any case, to have remote access to spectrometer software and diagnostics can easily be accomplished by installing either one of the remote desktop systems (eg PC Anywhere at around £100) or by use of a VPN if internet access is available. You would not need another measuring system for this.
